The VISION Club at South Windsor High School recently had the honor of hosting Clinical Laboratory Professionals from the Center for DNA-Guided Medicine to speak with students about their career journey in genetics, laboratory medicine, and biomedical research. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to gain insights into DNA science and the importance of curiosity in the medical field.
"What a great experience this presentation was for the 40+ students who attended. There was something for everyone. Students were so intrigued by the DNA extraction itself, but what was also compelling was Mr. Kocherla's story. He helped students see their future paths and the importance of curiosity and courage in putting themselves out there,"remarked Ms. Cara Singer, a STEM faculty, Vision Club and Mu Alpha Theta advisor at South Windsor High School.
For many students interested in pursuing careers in biology, pharmacy, medicine, genetics, and allied healthcare, this session provided valuable insights into the diverse career opportunities available and the critical thinking skills needed to excel in the field. Exposure to professionals like Mr. Kocherla and his team of board certified clinical professionals helps students bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, making their career aspirations feel more tangible and achievable.
"Many students think they know what they want to do in the future, but getting first-hand experience in meeting someone in their specific career interest is an important step in knowing the path they are taking is really for them. I think many students came away with more questions, and I saw a flame of interest being lit and sustained in them,"says Ms. Singer.
