A year ago, one of my college advisees told me about a wonderful summer program she had enrolled in that involved access to and training on the sophisticated technology used in biomedical research and in clinical medicine and also provided opportunities to hear from professionals in a wide range of medical specialties.
Her experience sounded fantastic, so I asked where she had completed this program on the assumption that she might have traveled out-of-state. I was thrilled to learn that she had been a student at the Center for DNA-Guided Medicine right here in the Greater Hartford Area.
I contacted Mohan Kocherla to see if his Center could participate in the Summer Programs and Career Exploration Fair our school was holding the following week. I was expecting to hear “no,” given the short notice, but Mohan rearranged his schedule to make room for our fair. Given the distinctiveness of the Center, his table at the fair was extremely busy. At this year's fair, Mohan brought the necessary equipment to
demonstrate Nucleic Acid extraction, and he had arranged for two Center "veterans" (including my student) to join him at the Center's table to answer questions from students and parents.
When I am working with my students who are interested in the health sciences field, I always recommend the Center as a great option for both middle and high school students. The programs the Center offers provide hands-on experience with the technology of the field and the equally rare opportunity to benefit from seminars by medical professionals in a variety of subspecialties. The bonus factor is Mohan himself—it is impossible to miss his enthusiasm for the field of DNA-guided medicine
and his commitment to helping his students develop the skills and knowledge they need to support their future dreams in college and beyond.
