The Center for DNA-Guided Medicine was invited to Biomedical Academy at Martin Kellogg Middle School in Newington, CT, to speak with students in grades 6 through 8 about the exciting field of personalized medicine. This engaging session introduced students to the fundamentals of genetics, laboratory operations, clinical research, and how patients respond to medications based on their genetic makeup.
A packed audience of 50 or more kids along with STEM faculty listened to the presentation from the laboratory team from CENTER FOR DNA-GUIDED MEDICINE.
During the event students actively participated in discussions and learned how advances in genetics are transforming modern medicine. Through an interactive presentation, they explored topics such as DNA sequencing, genetic testing, and real-world applications of laboratory research in patient care. The session aimed to spark curiosity in young minds
and provide them with a foundation for future career exploration in fields such as Medicine, Biomedical Research, Pharmacy, and Clinical Laboratory Science.
The discussion captivated students as they discovered how personalized medicine tailors treatments to an individual’s genetic profile, making healthcare more precise and effective. Many students expressed excitement about the subject, realizing how these insights could
guide their academic choices in high school and beyond.
A Martin Kellogg Middle School science faculty member reflected on the impact of the session:
"This presentation was an eye-opening experience for our students. The ability to see how genetics and laboratory medicine impact patient care in real life gave them a new perspective on science and healthcare. Many left the presentation excited about the possibilities that lie ahead."
The Center for DNA-Guided Medicine remains committed to fostering educational experiences that bridge the gap between academic learning and professional healthcare careers. By partnering with local schools, the Center continues to empower students with the knowledge and inspiration needed to pursue careers in healthcare and medical research.
